Virtual Social Worlds and the Future of Learning
Thanks to a posting from Topher Zwiers, I came across this video by Tony O’Driscoll that reviews the potential of using virtual worlds in education.
The 7 sensibilities that he discusses include:
- The Sense of Self
- The Death of Distance
- The Power of Presence
- The Sense of Space
- The Capability to Co-Create
- The Pervasiveness of Practice
- The Enrichment of Experience
In addition, he identifies virtual worlds as providing FREEDOM:
Flow
Repetition
Experimentation
Engagement
Doing
Observation
Motivation

As I have time, I’m looking forward to further exploring the potential of Second Life. Right now, my biggest hurdle is finding the time to explore. Numerous educational applications certainly exist.
